Ultimate Tides Privacy Policy
The short version
Ultimate Tides does not collect personal information and has no accounts. Your device's location is used on your phone and is never sent to us. The app does show ads through Google AdMob, and Google collects your device's advertising ID and related information to serve them — section 6 explains exactly what that involves and how to opt out.
1. Who this covers
This policy describes how the Ultimate Tides Android application (the "app"), published by Next Best Outdoors ("we", "us", "our") and distributed through the Google Play Store, handles information. It does not cover our other apps or websites, each of which has its own policy.
2. Information we collect
We do not collect personal information. The app does not collect, transmit to us, or store:
- Your name, email address, phone number, or any contact details
- Account credentials — the app has no sign-in and no user accounts
- Usage analytics or behavioral data — no analytics SDK is present
- Your location (see section 3)
We operate no server or database that receives information from the app. Any preferences the app remembers — such as your chosen tide station or display settings — are stored locally on your own device.
This section describes us. Google's advertising software inside the app does collect information about your device, and that is covered separately in section 6.
3. Location
The app may ask for permission to access your device's location so it can identify tide stations near you. When you grant that permission, your coordinates are used on your device only. They are not transmitted to us, not included in any tide data request, and not stored anywhere outside your phone.
Granting location access is optional. If you deny or later revoke the permission, you can still use the app by selecting a tide station yourself. You can change this at any time in Android's Settings → Apps → Ultimate Tides → Permissions.
Note that Google's ad software separately estimates an approximate location from your IP address for ad targeting, whether or not you grant the app location permission. See section 6.
4. Tide data and network requests
To show tide predictions, the app requests data from public tide data services operated by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). These requests identify the tide station and date range being looked up. They do not include your name, your coordinates, or any identifier tied to you.
As with any request made over the internet, the service receiving the request can see your device's IP address. NOAA's handling of that information is governed by its own privacy policy, available at tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/privacy.html. We have no access to and no control over data collected by NOAA.
5. Purchases
The app offers in-app purchases handled entirely by Google Play Billing. Google processes the transaction and your payment details. We never see, receive, or store your card number, billing address, or any other payment information — we only learn that a purchase was completed so the app can unlock the corresponding feature.
Google's handling of purchase data is described in the Google Privacy Policy.
6. Advertising (Google AdMob)
Ultimate Tides displays advertising supplied by Google AdMob. To select, deliver, and measure those ads, Google collects information from your device, including:
- Your Android Advertising ID — a resettable identifier Google uses to recognize your device across apps
- Device and app information such as device model, operating system version, language, screen size, and the app you are using
- Your IP address, from which an approximate (city-level) location is derived
- Ad interaction data — which ads were shown, viewed, or tapped
We do not receive this information. Google collects and uses it as an independent party under its own terms, described in the Google Advertising policy and the Google Privacy Policy. We see only aggregate reporting, such as total impressions and revenue — never anything identifying an individual.
Your ad choices
You can limit this collection on your device:
- Turn off personalized ads: Android Settings → Google → Ads → "Opt out of Ads Personalization." Ads still appear, but are no longer targeted using your advertising ID.
- Delete your advertising ID: Android Settings → Google → Ads → "Delete advertising ID." Apps can then no longer receive an identifier for advertising.
- Remove ads entirely: where the app offers an ad-free purchase, buying it stops the app from requesting ads at all.
Menu names vary slightly across Android versions and device makers.
7. Information Google collects as the app store
Separately from advertising, Google collects information about installs, crashes, and app performance as part of operating the Play Store and Android. We may see aggregated, anonymized statistics from this in the Play Console — for example, how many devices installed the app, or how often it crashed on a given Android version. This data does not identify individual users to us, and its collection is governed by the Google Privacy Policy.
8. Sharing and disclosure
We do not sell, rent, or trade personal information — we collect none to sell. The only third party receiving device information through this app is Google, in its role as the advertising provider and app store operator described above.
9. Data retention and deletion
We hold no personal information about you, so there is nothing for us to retain or delete. Data the app stores locally — settings, saved stations, cached tide predictions — is removed when you uninstall the app or clear its storage in Android settings.
Advertising and purchase data is held by Google, not by us. To manage or delete it, use your Google Account controls and the ad settings in section 6. If you believe we hold information about you and want it deleted, email us at the address in section 14 and we will respond within 30 days.
10. Children's privacy
The app is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone — children included — because we do not collect personal information at all. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us.
11. Security
The strongest protection we can offer is not holding your data in the first place, which is the approach this app takes. Network requests the app makes for tide data use encrypted HTTPS connections.
12. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights under laws such as the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) or the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) to access, correct, delete, or port personal information a company holds about you, and to object to its processing.
We hold no personal information about you, so in practice there is nothing for us to produce, correct, or erase. We do not sell personal information for money. Note that showing personalized ads through AdMob may qualify as "sharing" personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising under the CCPA; you can stop it using the ad controls in section 6. For information held by Google, exercise your rights directly with Google.
13. Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new "last updated" date. If a change materially affects how your information is handled, we will note it in the app's Play Store listing as well.
